SANCTUARY OF THE VIRGIN OF THE HOLY MOUNTAIN OF NOVI VELIA

The sanctuary of the Virgin of the Holy Mountain of Novi Velia, known in the Cilento region more simply as the Sanctuary of the Holy Mountain or just the Virgin of the Mountain, is located in the municipality of Novi Velia on the summit of Mount Gelbison, 1705 metres asl. This religious site has been a pilgrimage destination since the 14th century and is known as an extraordinary viewpoint over the Cilento district, the Vallo di Diano and the Gulf of Salerno.

Abbey of Santa Maria di Pattano

The Abbey of Pattano is the most fully preserved Italian-Greek monastery in southern Italy. The complex stands about two kilometres from the town of Vallo della Lucania, near the same-named village. The earliest historical mention of the abbey dates back to the year 993 CE, the year in which abbot Cosmas was called on to settle a local dispute between a nearby monastery and a landowner. This speaks a lot about the importance of the abbot of Pattano and suggests that the abbey already had a long history at the time.
